South Africa offers a favourable exchange rate for international travelers. Financial institutions are modern and there are numerous banks, bureaux de change and automatic tellers all around SA.South Africa's unit of currency is the rand, which is divided into 100 cents. Coins come in denominations of 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, R1, R2 and R5, and notes in denominations of R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200.Banking hours are generally from 9 AM to 3.30 PM, Mondays to Fridays; and 8.30 AM to 11 AM on Saturdays. Banks at airports adjust their hours to accommodate international flights.All major credit cards can be used in South Africa, with American Express and Diners Club enjoying less universal acceptance than MasterCard and Visa. It is advisable to have cash in the smaller and rural towns. Please note it is not possible to purchase fuel with a credit card.Most international traveler's cheques are accepted if they are in an acceptable currency and can be cashed at most banks. Many hotels and shops also provide this service.
